Ceramic Tiles

Ceramic tiles are a popular material used for flooring and wall cladding. Available in a variety of designs, colors and textures; ceramic tiles are widely used to decorate interiors and exteriors. Several advantages associated with ceramic tiles are their durability, versatility in terms of designs and colors as well as easy and low-cost installation and maintenance. Primarily comprising a mixture of sand, red or white clay, minerals and other natural products along with water; ceramic tiles are created using heat treatment, which solidifies the mixture. The top surface of this tile is porous in nature, thus it is generally sealed with a glaze. The topmost glazed layer over the tile is usually called as “design layer” as it showcases the color combination, texture or design of the same. Alternatively, we can say that only the glazed layer features the design and color, while the underlying tile consists of basic material, out of which the tile has been made. Ceramic tiles are best suited for areas that observe low to moderate traffic and available with glazed as well as unglazed surfaces. In comparison to unglazed tiles, glazed ceramic tiles are easy to clean. Additionally, glazed tiles don’t absorb moisture and odor and discourage bacterial growth. Glazed tiles have a glossy and slippery surface, hence best suited for wall applications. They are also more prone to cracking, when compared with the unglazed ones. On the other hand, unglazed ceramic tiles is highly recommended for exterior wall applications as well as interior applications in places that frequently come in contact with water, such as shower floor and kitchen walls. Unglazed ceramic tiles are also suitable for high-traffic areas like airport and stations. On the basis of hardness, ceramic tiles are ranked on a scale of 0 to 5. Tiles with rating 0 to 2 are appropriate for wall applications, while those with 3 are suited for residential installations. For commercial use, ceramic tiles should fall within the range of 4-5.
